Lunch Lady Fired For Letting Student Pay The Next Day

A New Hampshire lunch room employee is out of a job because she was compassionate.

Bonnie Kimball had a high school student come through her line with food he couldn’t pay for, and knowing his family could cover it, told him to bring the money in the following day. It was an eight dollar tab. No biggie. The boy did pay as promised but a week later Kimball was fired for her good deed.

The district manager of food service company Cafe Services let her go for breaking company policy, which amounted to theft. A letter she received said "On March 28, a District Manager was on-site and witnessed a student coming through the line with multiple food items that you did not charge him for. This in strict violation of our Cash Handling Procedures, the Schools Charge Policy and Federal Regulation governing free meals."

The head HR guy for Cafe Services said the student would have had a meal if he couldn’t pay, just not the one he chose. He then touted that the company is “proud of our ability to provide meals to those in need.”

Kimball worked at Mascoma Valley Regional High School for over four years. Two other employees quit in protest. The school is keeping their lips zipped.

We all know the bond that can form between students and lunch ladies
