Teen Denied Lung Transplant Because Of Weed

Teen Denied Lung Transplant Because Of Weed – A Utah teen was reportedly denied a lung transplant because weed was found in his system. In November, 19-year-old Riley Hancey’s lungs collapsed due to a severe case of pneumonia. Doctors at University of Utah Hospital said he would need a double lung replacement to survive, but then rejected him after he tested positive for THC.

“[The doctor] was willing to let him die over testing positive for marijuana,” his father Mark Hancey told Buzzfeed News. “This is what shocked me.” Mark insisted that his son rarely smoked pot, but did smoke with friends over Thanksgiving. He added, “It’s not like he’s a smoker for 30 years and (had) deteriorating lungs because of that.”

In a statement to KSL-TV, the hospital said, “We do not transplant organs in patients with active alcohol, tobacco or illicit drug use or dependencies until these issues are addressed, as these substances are contraindicated for a transplant.”

Riley did eventually receive a double lung transplant two weeks ago, but had to travel to University of Pennsylvania to get it. The family has now started a YouCaring page to raise money for his medical expenses.
